AMD Fantastic Fest Online: September 14-20
While we continue browsing the guide and consulting the magic 8-ball for picks and pans, you can take a peek at what's happening at this year's fest a week a few days early. Fantastic Fest 2008 just announced online viewing of 10 selections: 5 features and 5 shorts from Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Spain, and U.S. filmmakers. AMD has teamed up with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to present uncut sneak previews, hinting at a knockout success for this year's fest.
"La Crème", directed by Reynald Bertrand (who will make an appearance at this year's festival), is the feature that gets my highest recommendation. The exciting description of illusion in this French farce and fantasy make it an automatic selection. I also highly recommend watching one of the short films, "Treevenge" by Jason Eisner, director of the (fake movie) trailer "Hobo With A Shotgun", winner of the SXSW/Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse Trailer contest. (There's a rumor going around that filming of the real movie will take place sometime next year.) The title of Eisner's latest film project about killer Christmas trees (?!) reads like the plot in what could be a warning against human crimes against nature.
Looking down the barrel of a full-length grindhouse worthy masterpiece.

Don't forget the microwave popcorn and soda pop before you press play.
